Day 41: Sat 19 Aug: Helsingborg
Cycle: 38 km - Total so
far: 1,480 km
Start time: 8am
Stop time: 4pm
Weather: dull with a couple of early showers but some nice sunny periods later,
14 to 19deg
The earliest we could have breakfast was 8am (being a Sunday) so it was a compulsory late start for us. We wanted to do a local ride today but the weather was not that nice. However due to it being our last full day in Sweden we persisted and went anyway. A heavy shower saw us ducking for cover not far north of the city. From then on, other than the cool breeze and some clouds it was fairly nice; well by Scandinavian standards anyway. We ended up at a couple of little seaside villages, Domsten and the furthest being Viken. The former had a very old Holland-style windmill on the outskirts while the latter was blessed with the prettiest and best maintained church you'd see anywhere. Both had a marina to satisfy the Swedes passion for all things nautical. During the whole ride, we were accompanied by a mob of cyclists who were participating in a fundraising ride and officials with red flags kept waving them at us and stopping traffic so we could cross the road. Nice!
We had lunch in Olympia Park (where the local Stadium and Arena are) next to where the equivalent to Little Athletics was being conducted. After parking our bikes at the hotel, we took to shanks pony for a final wander around the city. Not as busy today and the sun made an appearance every now and again so we were able to get some half decent pics. Also called in at the Cultural Centre where there was a small museum on the local history.
It was then time for admin and relaxation in our room before dinner, which was
another make-your-own salad from the COOP with chicken for Wendy and smoked
salmon for Greg.
