Day 40: Fri 18 Aug: Helsingborg
Start time: 7:15am
Stop time: 4pm
Weather: very dull with glimpses of sun, 14 to 19deg
After breakfast Greg walked back to Hertz and dropped the car keys off and walked
back via the ferry office to check timings for our trip back to Denmark on
Sunday. He found another very helpful lady at that office; must be his youthful
good looks?! Back to the hotel to check out what to do and meet up with Mick
and Kate who had gone off in the opposite direction to drop off their car.
After coffee in our room we all wandered out through a beautifully manicured flower garden next door to the Hotel (our room overlooks it) and in the grounds of the City Keep. Quite an impressive looking stairway and combination water fountain lead down to the city centre. The City Hall, resplendent in its Gothic design, alas was not available for an internal viewing by us common folk. We then had a sticky beak around the underground railway station which seemed to have the longest platforms any of us had ever seen. The ferry terminal, very conveniently located above the railway station was very busy moving all the holiday-makers back and forth between Denmark and Sweden. There are also grog runs on the ferry apparently as alcohol is very expensive (like everything else) in Sweden.
The weather held off long enough for us to eat our lunch sitting outside Central Station next to a marina watching the world go by. Like half of Europe a few sections of the city are being dug up and modified so it looks a bit of a shambles at the moment.
While Mick and Kate went back to finish putting their bikes back together, we walked to the Museum of Failures. Some real gems of failure like the plastic bicycle, Colgate lasagna and the Vasa Ship, to name a few. We felt a bit of a failure too as it was not worth the A$18 each entrance fee. But, yet again the staff were incredibly pleasant and interested in where we had come from so all was forgiven.
As it was getting close to LLD time (it is a rest day) we headed back to our
hotel, via the city Stadium and Arena. Couldn't get in but it looked impressive
from the outside. Pre-dinner drinks were in our rather huge room with Mick and
Kate. Dinner was chicken and salad from the lovely fresh salad bar at the City
Co-op, washed down with a glass of wine.
