Day 5: Fri 14 Jul: Copenhagen to Frederiksvaerk
Cycle: 72 km - Total so far: 135
km
Start time: 8:25am
Stop time: 2:45pm
Weather: 11 to 20deg, cloudy but fine
It was great to leave the hotel this morning on the first real day of
the tour. We had to ride through the city, but it was not a problem as we were
on probably the best cycling infrastructure in the world. Took us about an hour
and a half to clear the city limits and get our first taste of the countryside.
We loved what we saw, everything so green and a nice mix of crops and
livestock.
We ended up at Farum for morning tea, where we had Starbucks coffee from
a servo which was not too bad. It was then off to Hillerod where we ate our takeaway
rolls (from breakfast) and fruit lunch. Hillerod is the home of the very big
and impressive Frederikborg Castle. Although we didn't venture inside, if the
courtyards and exterior are any indication the inside would be pretty
flash.
It was then a fairly easy run to our final destination for the day. We were all happy with what we saw today and look forward to what's up ahead. We experienced a wide variety of cycling surfaces, right from a cycle equivalent autobahn way down to a single gravel track, but all very smooth. We arrived at our hotel Hotel Frederiksvaerk about an hour too early, and had to ring the man who told Wendy how to access the rooms. That task completed, we unpacked, washed, and had an LLD whilst half watching the TDF.
Dinner was Chinese take-away, which was fairly
ordinary for some, and quite nice for others.
We ate it in the Hotel courtyard and washed it down with beer and wine.
