perfect for cycling
One of the best days cycle touring for a long time. A few hundred metres from the hotel, via a dead-quiet city centre mall and we were on a separate hot-mix bike path, where we stayed for most of the day. The wind was from the back and there was hardly a hill to speak of. We didn't see an awful lot, just lovely countryside filled with copybook crops, mainly the grains. Some very plump, ripe and ready for harvest. However the recent rain would have put a dampener on that. About 20km from Fredrikstad we finally got a light shower of rain from very ominous looking black clouds but it only lasted a few minutes. As we weren't in any hurry we took shelter under the awning of a restaurant.
At Karlshus we came across a lovely bakery where we had coffee and a Danish (the Scandinavians have no idea of what a Danish is apart from being a person from Denmark). Yes, hard to resist when your appetite has been stimulated by fresh air and exercise. Some say, "I ride so I can eat".
The 17km run into Moss was a toddle with a stiff tailwind and smooth paths so we were there in no time; too early in fact to check in. So, we dumped our panniers and went for a ride to the waterfront where we ate our lunch at a very pleasant spot out of that tailwind we'd enjoyed earlier. To kill more time we then rode around a bit checking out a rather compact but pretty town. It's quite a busy port with a large grain storage and export facility and there's also a sizable ferry that operates out of here to Horten, Norway.
It was then time to check in, do some fruit and tipple shopping for later. We
then went for a walk to check out possible dinner venues and after 3km of
walking, found one – China Garden - adjacent to the hotel. Nice food.
