Day 11: Thu 20 Jul: Frederikshaven
Cycle: 34 km - Total so far: 453
km
Start time: 8am
Stop time: 4pm
Weather: fine and sunny (despite the forecast of thunderstorms)
We had a little sleep in until 7am due to it being a rest day. Breakfast
of eggs, cereal, fruit, lashings of coffee and toast was far too much for a
non-cycling day; but it was there, so we ate it.
First off, we (just the two of us) headed north and found ourselves at a
man-made beach complete with potted palm trees; how tacky. However, the nearby
marina with its crystal-clear waters and cute cabins was wonderful in the early
morning light. We then stumbled across this post-card perfect graveyard
and church, which was the cleanest, neatest, most manicured one we'd ever seen.
Can you judge people on how they look after their deceased?
After coming to the conclusion the weather forecast was completely wrong
and it wasn't going to rain so off to Skagen in the train we went with our
bikes. 35 minutes later we were there. Skagen is one of those places that has
nothing but attracts millions of people a year. Ok, it is nice, the light is
perfect for photography and painting and it is the northern tip of Denmark. So,
we had the obligatory ride / walk to the very tip of Denmark, along with a
million other folks and got our photo taken by a total stranger. After a bit of
a ride around and some pics we got a hot dog / toasted sambo at the hotdog
stand for lunch. Anything else we would have had to sell one of the bikes to
afford it. Greg was hanging out for fish and chips (thinking we are at the
beach), but not a sign of any. So, after a punnet of the loveliest strawberries
we've ever tasted, we went and purchased our train tickets ($23 for us + 2 X
bikes) from Mr Machine and went back to Frederikshavn.
Back there it was ABC (Cathedral), the Bunker Museum (WWII is never far
away) and the Botanical Gardens (Bangsbo Botaniske Have). As we were about to
go into the Bangsbo Museum Greg discovered that he'd broken a spoke on his back
wheel probably from riding over gutters as he does. So off to the bike shop in
the city and presto in no time at all it was fixed ($30).
