Weather: overcast but fine, and a bit cool
It was so nice to finally get a tailwind for most of the way today so everyone
was happier. After yesterday's buffering by side and headwinds it was nice to
have a slight breeze. The ride followed a minor road, with a separate bike path
most of the way. We called into a little town called Hjallerup for nice coffee
at a very flash bakery/ cafe. Greg spent most of the time at the Red Cross
store but didn't buy anything. The clothes and other items were immaculate, but
not cheap like similar stores back home. Lunch was on the Harbour at Saeby,
where we watched many very flash boats come and go. It wasn't long after that
we were in the hotel just out of town at Frederikshaven.
After a rest we went off to the ferry terminal to buy our tickets to
Gothenburg, Sweden. We then did a short tour of the town, with a stop at the
nearest ice cream shop before heading back to the hotel to watch the end of the
stage of the TDU. It was then time to freshen up for dinner. We had pre-dinner
drinks in the hotel bar and as it was happy hour and we got two 500ml beers and
two shots of whatever we wanted for 70DK = AUD14. We had a Tuborg beer with a
pomegranate/liquorice flavoured vodka chaser; it tasted like the very salty
Dutch liquorice - nice but not something we would drink regularly. It was then
about a 1km walk to our dinner destination which turned out to be "fine
dining" in the forest. Two courses for 260 DK (AUD 52) ea plus drinks.
Both the meals and drinks were very, very good and we all walked home looking
like big fat ticks!!
A late'ish night by previous standards. This restaurant was where Wendy
bought her most expensive bottle of wine ever – a NZ Marlborough SB for
AUD60!!! (would have been no more AUD15 back home).
